We recently got to spend 1 night at the Intercontinental Singapore during a long layover between flights. This is one of IHG’s top hotels and I thought it would be a great opportunity to check out the property. This will be a short review because of our short stay.
How to stay for free
I used my Chase anniversary certificate for holding the IHG credit card. A benefit of the Chase IHG credit card is that you get a certificate you can use to book 1 night at any IHG property in the world. The annual fee is only $49 and is absolutely worth paying for this certificate. You could also use IHG points to book a room. It is a category 9 IHG hotel requiring 50,000 points a night.
Getting to the hotel
The hotel is very easy to access from the airport. You can take the MRT directly from the airport to Bugis station. From there it is only a few minutes walk to the hotel. This will only cost a few bucks a person. One thing to note is that the ticket machine does not take credit cards. You will need to use Singapore dollars with the machine to purchase your ticket.
We also used UberPool to get from the hotel to the airport in the morning as the MRT was not yet open. It was about just as cheap as the MRT and cost us only $8 USD total for 2 people.
I don’t have much to say about our room. The room was nice overall but was not one of the best hotels we have been lucky enough to stay in. One feature that stood out to us is that the TV had an HDMI cord plugged in to it so we could use that to connect our laptop to the TV to stream some Netflix before bed. The major drawback of our particular room is that we were only the 4th floor below the pool level and outside of our window we had a concrete wall instead of a view of Singapore. I am not sure if we got the short end of the stick because we used a free night or if it was just bad luck.
We spent an hour or so at the pool and thought it was nice. It was fairly empty which was a plus. One disappointment was that it seemed the hot tub was broken as it was the same temperature as the pool.
If you like shopping than this is a superb location. The hotel is surrounded by many shops, restaurants, and even a massive shopping mall. Since we did not have enough time to fully explore Singapore I cannot comment on the hotels location to the major attractions in Singapore. It is very close to Bugis train station which can help you get anywhere.
The hotel is very nice and I thought this was a decent use of my free night certificate. I do not believe the hotel is worth the 50,000 points a night price tag. You can get better value out of your IHG points at other properties around the world. One thing we loved is how diverse the people were who were staying in the hotel. When we left the hotel for dinner it felt like a scene out of a movie. I can’t really describe how it felt. There was just so much going on in the lobby with so many different types of people from all over the world. It was really cool. We also liked how cheaply we were able to get to and from this hotel from the airport. That is something that we have found to be becoming more and more important to us.
Have you stayed at the Intercontinental Singapore? What were your thoughts?
