For such a small island, Gili Air has some great places to eat. We had fun trying as many restaurants as we could during our stay. Here are the stand-out restaurants we tried, along with some tips to help you figure out where to eat in Gili Air.
We came here, one of Gili Air’s most popular spots, twice for their happy hour special: from 4-6:30, their cocktails are buy one, get one free. The view wasn’t bad either.
We had nachos here, and tried to hold back our laughter when we saw them, since it was a small pile of chips with barely any toppings. Despite their meager appearance, they were actually pretty tasty! However, we weren’t itching to return here.
Scallywags Beach Club
This place is very well-known for its food, so we had to try it out. While it was delicious, it wasn’t mind-blowing for the inflated price.
Favorite dishes: the chicken fajitas (we split one for lunch) and the Indonesia peanut wrap.
Was the pizza amazing? Yes. Was the wine the best we’ve had since Europe? Yes. Was it worth the price? Depends on how badly you’re craving some good, Italian pizza. We went here for dinner because of its great reviews and because it’s literally next to our hotel (Firda). We each had a glass of wine and split one margarita pizza, which surprisingly filled us. I tried to order the Nutella pizza, but alas they were out.
Tip: Make a reservation if you’re craving good pizza; their tables fill up quickly.
There are lots of local warungs (small restaurants) inland. We tried a few of them, but this one was the most noteworthy. It was close to our hotel, had great prices, and phenomenal gado gado.
The Mexican Kitchen
Set in a serene spot on the northern end of the island, the Mexican Kitchen offers a pretty good happy hour deal: buy one of their margaritas, and get free nachos.
I saved the best for last! In our opinion, this restaurant has the best food, by far, not to mention the best ambiance & location to watch the sunset.
Favorite dishes: cheap & incredibly fresh tuna sashimi, red fish curry, tuna burger.
