Big Aeroplan Asia 1 Changes Coming

Aeroplan Asia 1 to Asia 1 awards are one of the best hidden gems of all award charts. On December 15th, 2015 this will change.

Aeroplan currently considers the following countries to be part of Asia 1.

China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, North Korea, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam

On December 15th, 2015 this is what Aeroplan will consider to be Asia 1.

China, Eastern Russia, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan

The bolded countries are the ones that will be changing. Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will be moving from Asia 1 to Asia 2. Eastern Russia and Mongolia will be leaving Asia 2 and joining Asia 1. Geographically this makes complete sense and I have no idea how they came up with their initial Asia 1 and Asia 2 award regions.

Aeroplan currently charges the following for round trip travel within Asia 1.

  • Economy: 15,000
  • Business: 30,000
  • First: 50,000

Given the current definition of what makes up Asia 1, this can make for some insane awards. You could fly from Thailand to Japan, explore Japan for a bit, and then fly from Japan to Singapore for 15,000 miles in Economy, 30,000 in Business, or 50,000 in First. That is an insane amount of flying for the small amount of miles you need to spend on these awards!

Thailand - Japan - Singapore
Thailand – Japan – Singapore

On December 15th, 2015 this is what Aeroplan will charge for round trip travel within Asia 1.

  • Economy: 40,000 (167% increase in price)
  • Business: 80,000 (167% increase in price)
  • First: 110,000 (120% increase in price)

These are huge price increases especially because they are geographically making the Asia 1 region much smaller.

Now lets price out the same award I used as an example above with the December 15th, 2015 chart. This is now an Asia 2 to Asia 1 award. As you can see below, there are only minor differences in price when comparing an Asia 2 to Asia 1 award to a Asia 1 to Asia 1 award on the new chart.

  • Economy: 40,000 (167% increase in price)
  • Business: 80,000 (167% increase in price)
  • First: 130,000 (160% increase in price)

Only the price of the first class award increases when traveling from Asia 2 to Asia 1 as compared to traveling from Asia 1 to Asia 1.

Good News (Kind Of)

The good news is that Aeroplan will start allowing 1 way award redemptions, something that is currently not possible. Regardless, if you only need to book a 1 way award for travel within the current Asia 1 zone you should still do so now. You could book a roundtrip ticket for 15,000 (Economy), 30,000 (Business), or 50,000 (First) miles and simply not fly the return trip. This is still cheaper than the 20,000 (Economy), 40,000 (Business), 55,000-65,000 (First) miles you will need to book the one way award after December 15th, 2015.

Conclusion

Asia 1 to Asia 1 in the current Aeroplan award chart has amazing award value. I just wanted to let everyone know (in case you didn’t already) about this award while you still have time to book it!

Let me know if you have ever done this award and which airlines you tried to fly this award with!
